It is not known at this time whether this leak was intentional or not. According to a Kremlin intelligence document revealed by The Economist, Russia has proposed arming Iran with thousands of drones to attack American troops in the Gulf.
In detail, the plan of the Main Directorate of Russian Intelligence (GRU) validated by Vladimir Putin proposed to provide Iran with 5,000 short-range drones and an unknown number of longer-range satellite-guided systems.
Finally a formal proof
The tenant of the Kremlin even offered training in Tehran on the use of unblockable fiber optic drones against American soldiers. If the sharing of intelligence between Russia and Iran had already been mentioned, this is the most formal proof that has been revealed to date.
This document of around ten pages – with six diagrams and a precise map of the islands off the Iranian coast – would have been written during the first six weeks of the war, when the possibility that Donald Trump would order an invasion of Iran was considered.
One of six diagrams in the report shows how Iran would launch swarms of five or six drones to attack US landing craft from concealed positions up to 20 miles away.
The plan also proposed providing Iran with long-range satellite-guided drones equipped with Starlink terminals, or recruiting operators from among the approximately 10,000 Iranian students enrolled in Russian universities.
