The ceasefire in the Middle East is weakened after the American response on Friday May 8. Three ships were attacked by Iranian forces. Donald Trump threatens violent retaliation. The American army claims to have struck Iran after this attack, and would target military installations. Despite this new escalation, the American president firmly reassures: “They played with us, we swept them aside. They played. I call it a trifle. I will tell you when there will be no more of these ceasefires”Donald Trump said.

On the Iranian side, the tone is accusatory. Tehran claims that the United States has already violated the ceasefire after the attack on one of its oil tankers, and denounces strikes carried out in the south of Iran. “Following the attack carried out by the American military aggressors against an Iranian oil tanker, enemy units operating in the area of the Strait of Hormuz were targeted by Iranian missile fire”we announce on Iranian television.

The issue of the Strait of Hormuz remains at the heart of tensions. Earlier in the day, the United States and several Gulf countries raised their voices at the UN. “The developments underlined the importance of keeping this strategic sea lane safe, secure and fully open”recalled Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, permanent representative of Bahrain.

Iran maintains the pressure and accentuates the threat with the formalization of a principle of tolling to cross the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf. Nearly 1,500 ships are still blocked according to the International Maritime Organization.
