Iran makes a new offer to the United States to try to unblock peace negotiations

Iran has submitted a new proposal to the United States aimed at restarting negotiations to permanently end the war, a state media outlet announced on Friday, May 1. “The Islamic Republic transmitted its latest proposal text to Pakistan, a mediator in discussions with the United States,” said the official Iranian agency Irna, which did not provide further details. The White House declined to comment.

A ceasefire has been in effect since April 8, after nearly 40 days of Israeli-American strikes on Iran and retaliations from Tehran in the region. However, the conflict persists in other forms. Washington has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in retaliation for Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s consumed hydrocarbons used to transit before the conflict.

Since initial unsuccessful discussions on April 11, Islamabad has been working to bring back the two warring parties to the negotiating table. President Donald Trump, rejecting a previous offer, warned on Wednesday that the Iranians needed to “be smart and quick!”. He mentioned the possibility of extending the blockade against Iran “for several months,” according to a senior White House official.
