Facing Hezbollahs drones, the Israeli army slowed down by the ceasefire

The Israeli army is facing an increasing technological threat posed by Hezbollah’s First Person View (FPV) drones, while being limited in its response by the constraints of the current ceasefire. According to a military official, these drones, guided by fiber optic cables, have been used multiple times in recent weeks against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon and northern Israel.

These drones present a particular challenge: they are immune to electronic jamming, which significantly complicates their neutralization. The army claims to be actively working on developing technological solutions to counter this threat, but acknowledges that no effective system will be available in the short term or capable of providing complete protection.

The official emphasizes that the most effective method would be to target drone operators and the Hezbollah supply chain. However, this option is currently heavily restricted by the ceasefire rules, which limit Israeli strikes to immediate threats. In practice, this means that only targets directly engaged in an ongoing attack can be aimed at.

Faced with these constraints, the Israeli Air Force has adapted its tactics by supporting ground troops with mobile radars to detect drones and alert deployed units. These units then attempt to bring down the drones using conventional means.

Additionally, the Iron Dome missile defense system has been used to intercept at least 27 short-range FPV drones, according to the army.

Despite these efforts, military authorities acknowledge that the threat remains difficult to contain within the current framework. This situation highlights the operational limitations imposed by the ceasefire, as Hezbollah continues to exploit increasingly sophisticated technologies on the ground.
