In an article covering the detention of Nicolás Maduro in the United States, it is reported that the Venezuelan president’s son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, claims that his father is doing well while in custody. Maduro is said to be sharing a cell with 18 other detainees and is reportedly learning English. Despite the situation, his son denies any involvement of his father in drug trafficking, the reason for his arrest.
According to an interview with the German media outlet Der Spiegel, Maduro Guerra describes his father’s routine in prison, including exercising, writing in a journal, and interacting with other Spanish-speaking prisoners. Despite his father’s seemingly positive demeanor, he expresses concern about Maduro’s diet and health since his detention. Maduro is allowed to call home daily and tries to maintain a strong front during these conversations.
Maduro Guerra remains adamant about his father’s innocence in the drug trafficking allegations, attributing the arrest to political motives. He believes that recent changes in Venezuela, such as the proposed amnesty law for political prisoners and opening up the oil sector, are initiatives taken by Venezuelans themselves rather than a response to external pressure.
The arrest of the Venezuelan presidential couple, which occurred following threats from US President Donald Trump regarding drug trafficking allegations against Maduro, has been denied by the Venezuelan leader.
