The director of the CIA, John Ratcliffe, made a special trip to Havana on Thursday to meet with high-level Cuban officials, according to authorities, as Cuba faces a very serious energy crisis.

The CIA, without giving more details about the purpose of the meeting, posted photos of the meeting on its account X showing John Ratcliffe and his delegation meeting with Cuban officials. Among them was Ramon Romero Curbelo, the head of intelligence of the Cuban Ministry of the Interior.

Cuban authorities specified that the meeting aimed to “contribute to political dialogue” between the two ideological adversaries who, despite strong tensions, continue their exchanges. A high-level diplomatic meeting had already taken place in Havana on April 10. This was the first time a US government plane had landed in the Cuban capital since 2016.

On Thursday, Havana stated that “the elements provided by the Cuban party and the exchanges with the US delegation have shown categorically that Cuba does not pose a threat to the national security of the United States”.
