The image of the Uncle Sam country continues to deteriorate. For the second consecutive year, the United States sees its global perception degrade, according to the annual study of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation published this Friday.
The democracy perception index, rated from -100% to +100%, has dropped to -16% in the United States, compared to +22% two years ago, placing them behind Russia (-11%) and China (+7%).
“Regrettable but not surprising”
“The rapid decline of the United States’ image in the world is regrettable, but not surprising,” explained Anders Fogh Rasmussen, founder of the Alliance and former NATO Secretary General, as reported by Reuters.
To justify the degradation of this image, the study obviously mentions the policies of President Donald Trump, whether it is questioning NATO, generalizing tariffs, or threatening to invade Greenland.
It can be added that in less than 12 months, there has been a reduction in American aid to Ukraine, as well as the American-Israeli war against Iran and the resulting surge in oil prices.
According to the study, the United States was also the third most frequently cited country in response to the question of which country represented the greatest threat to the world, after Russia and Israel.
This report was conducted by the polling institute Nira Data between March 19 and April 21 among more than 94,000 people in 98 countries. The perception of countries was measured among a sample of 46,600 people in 85 countries. The report was published before the Copenhagen Summit on Democracy, scheduled for May 12.
