The mystery deepens surrounding the deaths of two United States agents in a road accident in Mexico after an operation against drug trafficking. According to the Mexican Ministry of the Interior, they did not have authorization to intervene in the country.

“One of the deceased entered the country as a ‘visitor’ and the other entered ‘with a diplomatic passport’,” the ministry said in a statement. The CBS network and other American media outlets had reported that they were CIA agents, the American agency responsible for foreign intelligence. Meanwhile, the US Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, stated that they were “two embassy staff members.”

Antidrug Operation

The deaths of the two Americans and two Mexican officials in a road accident in northern Mexico, following a major operation against drug trafficking, were announced by the prosecutor’s office last Sunday.

They had participated in a raid on Friday and Saturday against six clandestine laboratories producing synthetic drugs in Morelos, in the state of Chihuahua (north), bordering the United States, after a three-month investigation, according to the prosecutor. Their vehicle, part of a convoy of five vehicles, skidded and plunged into a ravine.

Two Versions

In an initial version on Sunday, the prosecutor of the state of Chihuahua, César Jáuregui, stated that Mexican soldiers and members of the Chihuahua State Investigation Agency were also in the convoy. He then explained that the American agents were “instructor officers” carrying out “training tasks.”

However, on Tuesday, Jáuregui provided a new version, stating that the Americans were giving “a course on the use of drones” in a location about six hours away from where the operation had taken place. According to him, the American agents then “requested to be able to move with the convoy” of a group of state police officers returning from the antidrug operation.

National Security

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that the federal prosecutor’s office was investigating potential violations of national security. “Any activity carried out by American agencies on our territory must respect Mexican laws regarding national security and be authorized by the federal government,” she emphasized.

Under pressure from the government of US President Donald Trump, Mexico has strengthened its antidrug cooperation with the United States in recent months and extradited dozens of drug traffickers to its northern neighbor.
