International conspiracy, intergalactic criminality, or simple and tragic coincidence? The unexplained death or disappearance of at least 10 American scientists involved in strategic research has caught the attention of the internet and the highest branches of the American government. This week, the FBI and a Congressional committee launched investigations to shed light on the matter, deemed “fairly serious” by President Donald Trump himself.
Within four years, at least ten scientists have vanished or met a fate as strange as it is sinister, and all of these individuals were believed to possess sensitive information on US nuclear and aerospace technology, and possibly extraterrestrial life, according to the most far-fetched extrapolations on the web.
The story first emerged on March 22nd on the front page of the Daily Mail, a sensational tabloid claiming that the “mystery of the disappearance of five scientists sends shivers through America.” Quickly picked up by social media and by alternative press outlets, even propagandists like RT, the mystery has only deepened over the past month.
Six additional unexplained disappearances or deaths have since come to light. This spurred internet users, the press, and ultimately the White House into action, prompting the FBI and a House committee to initiate their respective investigations this week in an effort to unravel the affair.
“These events raise the possibility of a sinister connection between these deaths and mysterious disappearances,” stated the Government Oversight Committee in a press release last Monday announcing the launch of their investigation. They could “pose a serious threat to the national security of the United States and to the security of individuals close to American scientific secrets.”
From NASA to the Air Force, this “wave” of disappearances, according to the committee, began with the death of Michael David Hicks in 2023. This prominent scientist had worked at NASA’s Propulsion Lab from 1998 to 2022, a leading entity in space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life. However, a series of known health problems could explain his demise at the age of 59, according to his daughter Julia speaking to CNN.
Two other deceased or missing individuals worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, renowned for its involvement in the Manhattan Project depicted in the movie “Oppenheimer.” Another addition to the list is Nuno Loureiro, a scientist assassinated last December while working on nuclear fusion at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
A general from the US Air Force, responsible for the air force’s scientific and technological research program and its $2.2 billion budget, has also disappeared. William Neil McCasland left his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in February, never to return, prompting an FBI search.
Another deceased individual, found dead in a lake last month, held leadership positions in a research center for chemical biology.
Though no evidence, to date, links these deaths and disappearances to a dark conspiracy, a wave of paranoia has gripped the authorities. “The odds are enormous that it is not a coincidence,” concluded James Comer, the president of the government committee conducting one of the ongoing investigations, on Fox News this week.
This Kentucky representative, known for launching partisan investigations into Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, suggested that, given the current context of the war in Iran, “all countries want to have their cutting-edge knowledge of nuclear technology.”
“It’s concerning,” he added on Monday. “If it were three or four people, it could be a coincidence. But 11? That’s an issue.”
The FBI has also launched its own investigation. “The Bureau is leading efforts to examine the links between the deaths and disappearances of these scientists,” they stated in a press release this week. “We are working with the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and our local partners to find answers.”
Online, internet users are conducting their own investigation, tracking the every public appearance of the deceased or missing individuals to fuel a mystery that now dominates the American mainstream media. In a country accustomed to conspiracy theories, many are drawing connections between this wave of deaths and disappearances and the knowledge of extraterrestrials that internet users – and some media outlets – attribute to several of the victims.
President Donald Trump, aware of the situation, noted last week that he was “coming out of a meeting on the subject.”
“I hope it’s just a coincidence,” he told journalists. “It’s a pretty serious thing. We will learn more in a week and a half.”
