France estimates significant progress on the first day of the G7 dedicated to the environment in Paris, avoiding direct climate discussion to accommodate the cooperative stance of the United States. French Environment Minister Monique Barbut expressed satisfaction with the approval of seven texts at the environmental G7 negotiations.

The United States was praised for its constructive approach in the discussions, with Minister Barbut highlighting the responsibility of the G7 and its partners to take action on environmental issues. The agenda included priorities such as biodiversity protection, ocean preservation, water resource security, desertification links, and infrastructure resilience against natural risks.

Despite the ongoing global warming, climate change was not directly addressed to avoid US sensitivities. The issue of fossil fuel phase-out, debated in a recent meeting in Colombia, remained untouched at this G7. The return of former US President Donald Trump, known for his climate skepticism, led to a regression in environmental protection efforts.

France aimed to win the support of the Trump administration and other partners with a financing initiative for biodiversity protection. A concrete step towards this goal was the proposed 600 million euro program for Africa, involving 22 countries and 144 protected areas. Additionally, discussions on marine areas and protected zones were also held during the summit. The financing mix includes contributions from philanthropic foundations.

Critics stressed the need for additional financing and genuine commitment from states to complement philanthropic efforts. Despite the absence of direct climate and fossil fuel discussions, the G7 highlighted the importance of environmental protection and biodiversity conservation in global agendas.
