President Donald Trump declared on Thursday, April 16 that the United States and Iran would likely resume in-person discussions this weekend as efforts continue to reach an agreement to end the conflict.
Recent developments include a collapse in raw material exports through the Strait of Hormuz, discussions of a new meeting between the US and Iran, and concerns that the American blockade could disrupt the ceasefire between the two countries.
In a statement at the White House, Trump expressed optimism about reaching a nuclear-free agreement with Iran, citing areas of agreement and Iran’s willingness to cooperate. He also dismissed reports of a 20-year American timeline for suspending Iran’s uranium enrichment, emphasizing that there was no such time limit.
Trump claimed that Iran had agreed to return nuclear dust buried deeply as a result of previous actions taken by the US. In a previous statement on April 15, Trump had stated that the conflict was “very close to its end.”
