Until the end, the 2025/2026 season of FC Nantes will certainly not have been a peaceful journey. Officially relegated to Ligue 2 since their defeat against RC Lens last weekend (1-0), the Nantes club played their final match in the elite league on Sunday against Toulouse at the Beaujoire stadium. A match without real sporting stakes, but played in a highly tense atmosphere after a catastrophic season in terms of results and club management.
Strongly critical of the direction and performance of their team, several Nantes supporters decided to express their anger directly during the match. From the 20th minute of play, many supporters – some masked and armed with iron bars – invaded the pitch, accompanied by smoke bombs, causing the immediate interruption of the game and intense tension around the field. Several cups were also thrown onto the pitch and the whistles multiplied within the Nantes stadium. A scene that notably sparked immense anger from Vahid Halilhodzic, seen completely furious and on the verge of tears on the pitch in response to the events.
Total chaos in Nantes
Already marked by numerous tensions throughout the season, the relationship between the Nantes public and the canary club seems to have definitively exploded at the time of their relegation to Ligue 2. Between inadequate results and disputed sporting choices from Valdemar Kita and his leadership, this descent appears to be the final point of an extremely chaotic 2025/2026 season for Nantes.
The invasion of the pitch on Sunday thus symbolizes the deep divide between the supporters and their team. It now remains to be seen if the match on Sunday will be able to continue and what the consequences of these incidents will be, both in terms of disciplinary action and the future of the club, which will have to quickly rebuild to attempt to regain elite status for the following season.
