Simon Ruiz, a Catalan filmmaker, has just released a new documentary called “Héritage” that delves into questions of identity. The film captures scenes from the Amazon and Catalan regions and will be available on YouTube on May 27, 2026.

Aged 33, Simon Ruiz, a photojournalist and filmmaker from Perpignan, has been exploring the concept of identity for over a decade. His latest film “Héritage,” to be released on May 27, takes viewers on a journey from the Brazilian Amazon to the stands of the USAP rugby team.

For the past three years, Ruiz has been working with the Gavião, an indigenous community in the Brazilian Amazon. Through traditional sports events, the Gavião aim to pass down their language, culture, and rituals to the younger generations. Ruiz’s personal involvement in these events sparked reflections on identity and heritage.

The documentary also connects Ruiz’s own adoption story to a broader exploration of identity, belonging, and transmission. It weaves together intimate moments and a deeper contemplation on what shapes individual and communal identities.

In addition to the Amazonian connection, the documentary also highlights the role of rugby in Catalan identity. Ruiz finds parallels between the Gavião’s cultural preservation efforts and the sense of collective identity nurtured by sports like rugby in the Pays Catalan region.

“Heritage” is a self-funded project that represents Ruiz’s commitment to independent filmmaking. His future plans include projects in Greenland and Asia, with hopes of securing partnerships. Through his storytelling, Ruiz aims to bring people together and spark curiosity.

The documentary will premiere on May 27 on Simon Ruiz’s YouTube channel @simonruiz.documentaire, supported by the National Rugby League and USAP.
