After more than a year since its opening in June 2025, the Roquevaire skatepark has not lost its shine. Built on the principle of DIY (do it yourself), the “GreenRock Skatepark” is the result of a project led by the MYPY Skateboard association.
In just four years, the association was able to self-finance up to 150,000 euros thanks to the support of numerous donors who provided cement and other materials needed for the construction. Located in the hills of Lascours, the place brings joy to skateboard enthusiasts.
Since its opening, the site has been open to everyone and reserved exclusively for skateboarding. According to Yuri Robinovtiz, the association’s president in charge of construction, the story is just beginning in Roquevaire: “We have a lease until 2037 with the town hall. There are still two sections to build, including a zone for beginners.”
The first learning stages, in collaboration with the Friche Belle de Mai skateboard school, have begun. Although currently mainly attended by young people from Roquevaire, the extension of the Aubagne tramway should in the future improve the skatepark’s accessibility, greatly enhancing its visibility and possibly paving the way for regular courses throughout the year.
Ambassador of “DIY skate”
Today, “GreenRock” is the French ambassador of “DIY Skate,” a movement that encourages the construction of handmade skateparks. Born in the early 80s in the United States, “DIY Skate” has grown with the explosion of street skateboarding due to the lack of skateparks in urban areas.
Some skaters have started building their own spots, an idea that quickly spread worldwide. Inherited from the punk culture of the late 80s, the movement has almost become a philosophy, advocating for creative freedom and community autonomy among skaters.
In Roquevaire, the ‘Greenrock’ is no exception: the site aims to maintain the spirit of freedom and sharing of the early DIY spots. In 2027, the skatepark will even be featured in an exhibition organized by the Mucem on skateboarding. “It is very rewarding to appear at the Mucem. In a way, our work is immortalized,” the president savors. A major recognition for a movement still underdeveloped in France.
