One year ago, the idea seemed absurd.
10 million euros blocking everything
The heart of the problem is clear and revealing. Real Madrid has made an offer for an extension of around 20 million euros net per year, which would already make Vinícius one of the highest-paid players in the Madrid squad. His camp, on the other hand, is demanding 30 million euros net annual salary – equivalent to or above that of Kylian Mbappé, the club’s internal salary benchmark. Despite weeks of negotiations, the gap of approximately 15% is not closing.
The player has reportedly set his conditions very directly: no signature until Madrid raises it to 30 million. In return, the club has sent its own signal: if no agreement is reached within the 20-22 million range by summer 2026, Real will actively open the door to a sale. This scenario was deemed “unthinkable a few months ago”, but is now being treated as a serious option in the club’s offices.
The clock is ticking, and Madrid knows it
The time factor exacerbates everything. Vinícius is under contract until June 2027, meaning he is nearing the final stretch before being able to negotiate freely with any club without a transfer fee. Real Madrid finds itself in the most uncomfortable position in football: either they sell him this summer and recoup 120 to 150 million euros according to market estimates, or they risk losing him for nothing twelve months from now – the worst financial outcome imaginable for an asset of this value.
The Brazilian’s agents reportedly wasted no time in testing the waters: contacts have already been made with clubs from the Premier League, Ligue 1, and Saudi Arabia. A maneuver of psychological as well as financial pressure, putting Florentino Perez in a dilemma with no easy answer.
Xabi Alonso in the equation
Beyond the numbers, a human factor complicates the picture further. The relationship between Vinícius and Xabi Alonso is said to be tense, fueled by replacement decisions that were poorly received and some public outbursts that have upset both sides. The player, according to Spanish press, may be less willing to commit long term until this relationship is smoothed over. It’s a factor that Florentino Perez cannot resolve with a simple bank transfer.
The end of an era?
Vinícius Júnior arrived at Real Madrid at 17 years old in 2018 for 45 million euros. He became the most exciting player of his generation, the offensive soul of a club that has won everything with him. But football is a sport of interests as much as passion – and this summer, those interests diverge. Can Real Madrid really sell Vinícius? The question is no longer rhetorical.
