A week after being eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, the Santiago Bernabéu stadium expressed its discontent on Tuesday evening. Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius, and especially Eduardo Camavinga were heavily booed by some of the Madrid crowd, despite the victory against Alavés (2-1) in La Liga.
The Bernabéu did not wait long to make itself heard. A week after being eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals by Bayern Munich, the Madrid crowd expressed their discontent on Tuesday evening during the match against Alavés in La Liga (2-1), taking aim at several players deemed responsible for the looming trophyless season.
Even before the match, and with his first touches, Kylian Mbappé was greeted with some boos, a direct result of recent performances deemed below expectations in recent weeks. The French captain responded with a successful goal in the 30th minute, with a deflected shot that beat Sivera. A somewhat accidental goal, met with little celebration and only a few smiles from his teammates, but no gestures towards the crowd.
Despite this goal – his 41st of the season, including 24 in La Liga – the criticisms did not cease. Especially at the end of the first half when the 2018 World Cup champion missed a lob in a rapid counterattack (45th+5), the boos echoed down from the stands.
Vinicius and Camavinga were also targeted by the Bernabéu
While Mbappé received a portion of the criticism, Vinicius was the main target of the boos throughout the evening. From the warm-up to each of his touches, the Brazilian winger faced disapproval from a large section of the crowd. He responded on the field with a goal in the 50th minute after halftime, before celebrating by mimicking an apology to the fans.
Finally, Eduardo Camavinga’s situation also illustrated the tense atmosphere. Expelled in Munich during the Champions League quarter-finals, the French midfielder is going through a delicate period. His entrance in the 63rd minute was accompanied by significant boos, continuing with each of his first touches. A tough week for the French international, directly facing the consequences of his expulsion and increasingly rumored to depart during the summer transfer window, five years after arriving in Spain.
