We owe the series Prison Breaklaunched in 2005, to screenwriter Paul Scheuring. The story – rich in twists and turns – spanned five seasons. It features two brothers at the heart of the plot: Michael J. Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln “Linc” Burrows (Dominic Purcell). The second is accused of a serious crime and sentenced to the death penalty.

His brother, Michael, will try by all means to get him out of there. He will end up being incarcerated himself, of his own accord. The first four seasons were broadcast between 2005 and 2009. Then, after a long hiatus, a final season was finally launched in 2017.

The series has now been the subject of a reboot, which goes in a completely different direction.

New aesthetic

The announcement came last year. The site Deadline reported then that an independent production, inspired by the universe of the cult series, was in the works. It would take place in the same universe as the original. And today, we know even more.

Lukas Gage is one of the new headliners of the reboot of Prison Break. He talks about it in an interview with Varietydiscussing the main differences with the original series. He is particularly known for his roles in You (2023), Smile 2 (2024) or even People We Meet on Vacation (2026).

From what we know, the 31-year-old actor will play a politician, a first-time candidate for Congress. He told the magazine: “It’s dark, brutal and disturbing.” And to add:

“We are clearly paying homage to the old series, but it is a completely new interpretation. Elgin has a very personal connection to this story and has his own vision of the universe. We looked for the right balance: we didn’t try to reproduce the magic of the original series. But since it will be broadcast on Hulu and not on Fox, we can afford to go much further in the brutality”

The creator involved in the reboot

Elgin James is responsible for the script of the reboot and also participates in the executive production of the pilot episode. The creator of Prison BreakPaul Scheuring, is also part of the team. Alongside Lukas Gage, we will notably find Emily Browning (Pompeii) et Drake Rodger (Motorheads).

At any rate, Lukas Gage promises the opening of a particularly dark chapter in the series’ universe. According to him, the casting and those responsible for the project will benefit, thanks to the production for Hulu, from new possibilities in terms of narration and especially visual representation. The original series also continues to enjoy an excellent reputation.

A popular series

Sur IMDb, Prison Break displays a rating of 8.3 out of 10. On Rotten Tomatoesprofessional critics give it 61%, while the public gives it 77%.

Regarding the fifth season, a comment posted on a review platform emphasizes: “I was captivated from start to finish and loved the many unexpected twists and turns. There was a character for every type of viewer. “No one looked like the other, which was the charm of the series.”

Another review opines: “It might take a little while before the plot really takes off, but trust me, it’s worth the wait.” In the end, you’ll regret not being able to watch the whole season in one go on Netflix.”

No release date has not yet been announced for this reboot carried by a new distribution. In the meantime, old seasons remain available for streaming via a Disney+ subscription.
