British singer Bonnie Tyler, star of the 80s, has come out of a coma. However, her condition remains very serious and she is still in intensive care in a hospital in Portugal, her agent said.
L’interprète du tube Total Eclipse of the Heart had been placed in an artificial coma at the beginning of May after having undergone emergency intestinal surgery at Faro hospital, where she has a second home. The singer known for her gravelly voice and blonde hair is 75 years old.
“Bonnie is no longer in a coma, but her condition remains very serious and she is still in intensive care in a hospital in Portugal,” those around her said in a press release on the star’s website. “Although his condition is improving, the process is slow. His doctors remain confident that he will make a full recovery, but it will take time,” the statement added.
A billion listens on Spotify
The singer was due to begin a tour on May 22, notably in Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom, with a date in Switzerland, on November 9 in Zurich. Shows planned for this summer are canceled or, “as far as possible”, postponed until next year. “At present, however, we remain hopeful that our fall shows will be able to take place,” adds the singer’s entourage.
Real name Gaynor Hopkins, Bonnie Tyler was born in 1951 in Wales. She became known at the end of the 1970s with titles like It’s a Heartache. But it’s the hit Total Eclipse of the Heartreleased in 1983, which made her a worldwide sensation and reached number 1 on the charts in many countries. This song exceeded 1 billion plays on Spotify in early 2026.
She also had success with Holding Out for a Hero (1984), on the film’s original soundtrack Footloose. She was rewarded by Queen Elizabeth II, shortly before the latter’s death in September 2022. King Charles III then awarded her the medal of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2023 for services rendered to music. (jzs/ats/afp)
