SEOUL, June 15 (Yonhap) — Director Yeon Sang-ho’s new zombie film “Colony” surpassed the 5 million admissions mark last Saturday, having topped the box office over the past weekend with 301,000 admissions, which represents 34.5% of revenue between June 12 and 14, according to data released by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC).
This is the fourth time in a row that the film has taken pole position over the weekend. The story follows a group of survivors battling zombies in a skyscraper quarantined following the outbreak of an unidentified contagious virus. Yeon offers with this film a new version of the zombie film, ten years after the success of “Last Train to Busan” (2016). It had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last month, in the Midnight Shows section.
The cumulative number of spectators for this film has now reached 5,212,000, after crossing the 5 million admissions mark on June 13. It thus became the second film to exceed this milestone this year, after the historic film “The King’s Warden”, which attracted more than 16 million spectators.

The South Korean comedy “Wild Sing”, led by actor Kang Dong-won, attracted 869,000 spectators in total, including 205,000 during the last weekend (22.5% of receipts over the three days), followed by the science fiction film “Disclosure Day” by Steven Spielberg with 112,000 admissions (13.1%), then the Hollywood horror film “Backrooms”, which recorded 108,000 admissions (13.1%).
Concerning online reservations for screenings in the coming days, the animated film “Toy Story 5” from Pixar Animation Studios is currently in the lead with 65,000 tickets reserved (39.9% of the total). The film will be released in theaters in South Korea on June 17. It is followed by “Colony” (10.5%), “Wild Sing” (6.4%) and the South Korean horror film “The Shrine” (5.8%), in which Kim Jae-joong, ex-singer of the group TVXQ, plays the main role.
