Everland Park in Yongin, South Korea has just celebrated the birth of a new baby giant panda in excellent health. Born on June 3 at 10:53 a.m., this little female weighed 171 grams at birth, after two hours of labor for her mother, Ai Bao.
This happy event makes the little panda the younger sister of Fu Bao, born in 2020, as well as the twins Rui Bao and Hui Bao, born in 2023. The parents, Ai Bao and Le Bao, now watch over a family of four babies within “Panda According to Dong-hee Jeong, the director of the Everland Zoo, the mother and the newborn are doing perfectly well.
Un succès pour l’espèce
Beyond the joy it brings to visitors, this birth represents a major scientific victory. It comes as Panda World celebrates ten years of existence and a decade of cooperation and research on the conservation of endangered species. Indeed, the reproduction of giant pandas is known to be particularly difficult, recalls the Korea Times. Females are only fertile once a year and this period lasts only one to three days.
As for the baby, and as tradition dictates, his name will be chosen through a public competition when he reaches the age of approximately 100 days. Until then, she will stay in a reserved space with her mother. Specialists will carefully monitor her development, particularly her ability to walk alone and strengthen her immune system. A date for presentation to the public will be set later, once its adaptation to its environment has been assessed.
