Present on the red carpet of the Gotham TV Awards ceremony, the Duffer brothers insisted on the importance of offering original scenarios to spectators.
Love of risk. Rewarded during the Gotham TV Awards ceremony last night, with an award recognizing their talent as visionaries, the Duffer brothers took the opportunity to recall the importance of offering original stories to spectators, despite the risk that this may represent for launching into the unknown for the studios.
“I appeal to everyone in this room who has any power: let’s choose risk over fear. Let’s do everything we can to support new voices, to create bold personal stories, and then let them do it,” explained Matt Duffer. “First, I would say it’s less work for you. Second, it will make you a lot of money. But above all, it will result in being cooler,” he continued.
Ross Duffer, for his part, recalled how “Stranger Things” was a risky bet before becoming an essential television phenomenon, whose final season 5 brought together tens of millions of viewers around the world last January.
“I can’t emphasize enough how crazy a risk Stranger Things was, and how completely absurd the project seemed on paper. You know, we only had one movie, which Warner Bros. hated so much they refused to distribute it, and a weird 50-page script starring kids – but it wasn’t aimed at kids. Nobody wanted it,” he pointed out.
