“Dancing doesn’t interest me at all. I don’t understand the codes and it’s a language that is completely foreign to me. And yet, despite that, your film fascinated me, and totally impressed me“, immediately declared a spectator from Aix during the debate following the preview at the Renoir of Juliette Binoche’s film, Ahead. Amused smile from the person concerned and support from a spectator adding how this feature film remains from start to finish absolutely exceptional in density. This was confirmed by choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, present in the room, who praised the performance of the two artists who were present on stage before being brought together on screen.
“The idea for this film was born some time ago“, explained the director. It was in 2007 that the French actress and the British dancer and choreographer Akram Khan decided to embark on a unique artistic adventure: Akram wanted to act, Juliette wanted to dance. Together, they would write and create IN-Ia show that will push them to surpass themselves. With this first film as a director, Juliette Binoche invites the viewer to enter into the intimacy of creation, revealing the trials, the joys, the doubts which lead from rehearsals to the final show. 120 performances will be given around the world.
Robert Redford, a legendary godfather
“Before building together, we didn’t know each other“, declared Juliette Binoche. After an initial contact, the actress spent two days in a rehearsal room to see the way in which Akram Khan works. It was following this meeting that the two artists decided to meet again, two years later, to co-create the show IN-I.
The rest looks like a fairy tale. “Originally from within us, there is a legendary actor, Robert Redfordspecifies the actress. He came to attend a performance ofIN-I in New York and suggested that I make a film of this show. I then asked my sister, Marion Stalens, to film the last seven dates of the tour in Paris. I was convinced that these images would, one day, make a film but without knowing when or how.“
The result is there, and it is a great cinematic shock where, as Juliette Binoche wished, “there was the desire that the spectator would be thrown into the rehearsal room, and that he would become an actor in the show.“A powerful work greeted by the people of Aix in the warmest of ways.
