Figure majeure de la thought française et théoricien de la “thought complexe†, Edgar Morin died at the age of 104 in Paris, Friday May 29, 2026. His death was confirmed at Monde by his wife, Sabah Abouessalam. The cause of his disappearance has not been revealed. Born July 8, 1921 in Paris under the name Edgar Nahoum, the man who spanned more than a century of history left behind a considerable body of work. Resistance fighter during the Second World Warsociologist, philosopher and essayist, he established himself as one of the most influential French intellectuals of his time. Internationally recognized for his work on complexity, this famous philosopher devoted a large part of his life to trying to understand the mechanisms of the contemporary worldmixing sociology, anthropology, philosophy, politics and science. His major work, La Méthodepublished between 1977 and 2004, remains one of the founding texts of his thinking on “complex thought”.

Engaged throughout his life in major social debates, Edgar Morin never stopped publishing or speaking out. In recent years, he has spoken regularly on international crises, ecology, democracy and the future of humanity. He received the Legion of Honor on July 14, 2021 alongside many other personalities. “You are a universal thinker, with all-round curiosity, who has built complex thought from all disciplines of the mind. You have always been in the right place at the right time to become a citizen of the world who has crossed all borders”, declared Emmanuel Macron.
In March 2025, as he approached his 104th birthday, he gave another long interview to Parisian from Marrakech, where he stayed part of the year with his wife. “The older I get, the more I crave the sun. I hate Parisian autumns and winters which are all gray“, he explained to our colleagues, preferring to live in this country”where it’s so mild and the light is so beautiful“. At the time of writing, the date and location of his funeral have not been announced.

His career had also been marked by several personal tragedies, notably the death of his mother when he was only ten years oldan event which had deeply marked him and to which he still referred in his last interviews. For many, Edgar Morin embodied a rare form of humanist intellectual, capable of linking disciplines and thinking about the upheavals of the world in all their complexity. His death marks the disappearance of one of the last great French thinkers of the 20th century.
