We all know these Provençal villages which seem frozen in time, with their tiled roofs, their fountains and their legendary calm. But what happens when one of them becomes, almost unwittingly, the discreet meeting point for Hollywood’s biggest stars? At first glance, Cotignac looks like all the other towns in Haut-Var: 2,000 inhabitants, eighteen fountains, a courtyard lined with plane trees and an imposing tuff cliff in the background. Except that for several years, we have come across George Clooney who dines incognito, Cindy Crawford who lunches on the terrace, and even Brad Pitt who stops by the local post office. A discreet but spectacular metamorphosis, which transforms this labeled village into a true refuge for celebrities in search of authenticity.
When rock and cinema settle in Haut-Var
The history of Cotignac as a star haunt is not new. As the Vinci Autoroutes station reminded us in April 2025,
Joe Dassin got married there in 1978 and even had a house built there. At the time, it was the legendary Miraval recording studio, located a few kilometers away, which attracted Pink Floyd, AC/DC, The Cure and Henri Salvador. All these little people then get used to the Lou Calen, the historic hotel-restaurant of the village, managed by a certain Huguette Caren. The latter already described Cotignac as “the Saint-Tropez of Haut-Var”.
But it was in 2015 that the real click came. Graham Porter, a Canadian businessman from Vancouver, who fell in love with the village during his student years, bought the Lou Calen hostelry and several surrounding plots. According to Le Journal des Entreprises, 30 million euros are injected via different companies owned by this shipowner who divides his life between Vancouver, Hong Kong and Cotignac. The result? A 3.5 hectare estate, 36 rooms, two restaurants, a bistro, a pastis bar, an artisanal microbrewery, an art gallery, and even a green star in the Michelin Guide obtained in 2023 by the gourmet restaurant Le Jardin Secret by chef Benoît Witz.
The timing of this rebirth owes nothing to chance. Within a radius of 30 kilometers around Cotignac, three Hollywood stars have become owners: Brad Pitt at the Château de Miraval in Correns since 2011, George Lucas at the Château Margüi in Châteauvert since 2017, George Clooney at the Canadel estate in Brignoles since 2021. And Cotignac, a few minutes by car from each of these properties, has become their natural base.
The secret addresses of the stars in the village
It was Le Journal du Dimanche which, from October 2023, revealed this new atmosphere. According to our colleagues, Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber, co-founder of the Casamigos tequila brand with
George Clooneyhad lunch there incognito at the start of summer 2023. George Clooney himself had been there two weeks earlier. George Lucas has his habits there as a neighbor. And Brad Pitt would have been seen at the village post office a few months before. Le Figaro Magazine, in a major report published recently, confirms the trend: Lou Calen’s Bistrot has become the meeting place for gourmets, including George Clooney “located not far from there, in Brignoles”.
But the Clooneys have another favorite address in the village. According to the Gala website, the couple, recently naturalized French, have become regular customers of Chez Picotte, a bistronomic restaurant hidden in rue Saint-Jean, away from Cours Gambetta. In the kitchen: chef Catherine Wade, who trained at the Ferrandi School and Pré Catelan, in Paris. Its cuisine, labeled “committed restaurant”, revisits Southern classics with an obsession with local and zero waste. Average rating on TheFork platform: 9.4 out of 10. Yes, you read correctly!
The buzz goes far beyond the borders of the village. In Tourtour, 30 minutes away, there is the surprise arrival in a convertible of Brad Pitt in June 2023, for the filming of a DeLonghi ad, which had toured the world. The actor, who was initially supposed to arrive by helicopter, preferred the car to remain discreet. Failed.
American tourism booming
The tourist impact is felt in a spectacular way. American hotel occupancy in France jumped by 12.9% in the summer of 2025, according to an INSEE note published last September. With 5.3 million overnight stays, Americans are now the leading foreign clientele in French hotels. In the Var, international attendance is up 6% compared to 2023, driven in particular by the American market, as Var Tourisme specified in its season report in September 2025. A trend that should be amplified by the direct Washington-Nice flight launched by American Airlines in May 2025, according to the Committee Regional Tourism PACA.
On site, the excitement is managed with caution. The mayor without label Jean-Pierre Véran, elected since 1990, told the JDD that he preferred to highlight the entry of Cotignac into the Plus Beaux Villages de France club at the end of 2022, rather than “showbiz”. Lou Calen, for his part, focuses on eco-responsibility: 80% of the craftsmen mobilized for the work were sourced within a 30 km radius, indicates Le Journal des Entreprises.
And that’s not all! For locals, coming across a Hollywood icon at the Tuesday morning market is no longer exceptional. Cotignac, for its part, is seeing its rating rise in the Anglo-Saxon guides. The former little Saint-Tropez du Var, now labeled “The most beautiful village in France”, is preparing to experience increasingly American summers. Between Provençal authenticity and discreet glamour, the village has found its balance. And obviously, Hollywood has found its new secret address.
