Chez Yoon Ga-eun, the cinema begins in a child’s bedroom. Learning films such as Diabolo mint by Diane Kurys (1977) – broadcast several times on South Korean television – shaped the tastes of the future director. “I had the impression that they understood me, surprised me and guided me to an unknown world.”
A graduate of the Korean National University of the Arts in Seoul, Yoon Ga-eun stands out in France with Guest, winner of the Grand Prix at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival in 2012. At 44 years old, she is therefore signing her third feature film this year, The World of Love, on the daily life of a jovial, sunny high school student appreciated by her classmates. As in The World of Us (2016) et The House of Us (2019), children and adolescents occupy a central place in his work. A tropism that Yoon Ga-eun describes as “non-intentional”, she who simply says she likes to film “the age of life when everyone goes through their first experiences of all kinds†. Admirer of Hirokazu Kore-eda, Ken Loach, the Dardenne brothers, Agnès Varda and even Mike Leigh, the young woman defends a cinema “Utile au monde” and capable of “contribute to society”.
