Under the Seine 2: shooting is officially launched and the casting already holds surprises!

Released in 2024 on Netflix, “Under the Seine” quickly became one of the biggest hits on the platform, even entering the ranking of the most viewed films in just a few days. In just eleven days, the feature film even set a record performance, propelling its concept of a shark in the Seine to the rank of a global phenomenon. However, this success was accompanied by controversies, with plagiarism accusations ultimately rejected by the courts. Despite this controversial context, the sequel finally materialized. On Friday, May 1, 2026, Variety announced that the filming of “Under the Seine 2” had officially started in the south of France, with a release planned for 2027. Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes are reprising their lead roles, while this new installment promises to be an ambitious extension of the first film, eagerly anticipated by Netflix subscribers and those curious to see how the story will unfold this time.

We should see actress Anne Marivin back in the cast, reprising her role as the Mayor of Paris, which was central in the first film and in dealing with the crisis that hit the capital. This anticipated return ensures continuity with the first installment, while also opening up new narrative possibilities. But the sequel isn’t limited to familiar faces: according to Variety, several new actors are also joining the project. Among them, Guillaume Gouix (Soleil noir), Philippe Bas (Profilage), and Manon Bresch, currently starring in the series “Privileges.” The plot of “Under the Seine 2” takes place three years after the events of the first film: after the panic caused by a horde of mutant sharks during the Paris triathlon, the creatures not only survived but also started reproducing. Despite efforts by authorities to stop them, the situation escalates to a flood in the capital.

What awaits the survivors of the first film in this sequel

The synopsis of “Under the Seine 2” sets the tone: Sophia and Adil are back for a high-risk mission: “Three years after the Paris triathlon disaster, the heart of the capital is underwater. Sophia and Adil reunite for a perilous mission: track Lilith, the original predator, in the shark-infested Seine. There, they will discover that this deadly fauna hides a much more surprising reality.” This is sure to excite fans… For this sequel, Alexandre Aja, known mainly for “Piranha 3D,” takes over the directing, succeeding Xavier Gens. Xavier, however, remains involved as a co-writer and associate producer. Alexandre expresses his enthusiasm for this project, combining two of his passions: Paris and sharks. “I love Paris and have always wanted to make a shark movie, so it was an obvious yes when the opportunity arose to delve into the story,” he revealed.
