The Unipop season continues at the Atmosphère cinema in Capdenac-Gare with a new event on Monday, April 20, featuring a live conference and film screening.

The evening will begin at 6:30 pm with the live broadcast of a conference titled “The Mayas and the myth of collapse”, led by Chloé Andrieu, an archaeologist and researcher at CNRS. She will delve into the often fantastical representations of the Mayan civilization. From abandoned cities to archaeological mysteries and tales of collapse, these images have fueled the collective imagination for centuries. The conference will offer a scientific perspective to debunk these misconceptions and shed light on a rich and still vibrant culture, whose lifestyles and contemporary struggles still resonate today.

At 8:30 pm, the evening will continue with the screening of the film Ixcanul, directed by Jayro Bustamante. This Guatemalan feature film follows Maria, a 17-year-old Maya living with her parents on the slopes of a volcano, in a coffee plantation. Promised in an arranged marriage, she dreams of a different destiny. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions to the speaker via SMS during the conference.

Presented by l’Astrolabe, in partnership with the Jean Eustache cinema in Pessac, this program is part of the “Unipop from city to city” initiative, which allows for live university lectures to be followed from cinema venues within the region.

Entry fee is a flat rate of 5.50 euros.
