The TRIO Upward Bound program at SUNY Plattsburgh is set to return after a pause in 2025. New York Assemblyman Michael Cashman, a graduate of the Upward Bound program, made the announcement on Wednesday. Upward Bound is grant-funded through the federal government. It provides college prep to high school students from low-income families at no cost. Applications are also open to students in households where neither parent graduated college with a bachelor’s degree. In September of 2025, SUNY Plattsburgh was notified by the U.S. Department of Education that the TRIO Upward Bound grants would not continue. The federal government has not yet published the list of awards for the 2026 fiscal year, but in his statement, Cashman said he is “ecstatic” about Upward Bound’s return.”We must not forget that Upward Bound should have never been cancelled to begin with,” Cashman said. “I will always advocate for TRIO programs and do everything within my power to make sure we do not lose critical funding like this in the future.”NBC5 reached out to SUNY Plattsburgh for additional details about communications with the Department of Education and the timeline for the grant. We are awaiting a response.
