President Donald Trump’s approval rating hit a second-term low in new NBC News polling as Democrats gain ground ahead of November’s midterm elections.

The polling, which was released on Trump’s 80th birthday, June 14, shows that the president’s approval rating among all U.S. adults currently sits at 39%, five months out from the pivotal midterms. The survey results mark Trump’s lowest approval rating in an NBC News poll since his first term.

The outlet tracked a similar result among registered voters in July 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and the country's racial reckoning after the murder of George Floyd.

Trump’s approval rating among rural Americans also hit a new low of 50% in June, compared to 60% approval in February 2025, the month after Trump took office a second time, according to a June 3-8 Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Rural voters were central to Trump’s White House victories in 2016 and 2024. The president’s drop in rural support is due to disapproval over his handling of the U.S. economy and cost of living, per Reuters/Ipsos polling data.

The NBC and Reuters surveys come amid economic uncertainty across the nation as Americans struggle with surging gas and grocery prices, partly spurred by the Iran war, which Trump said may come to an end on June 14.

The results also come as Republicans face slim majorities in both the House and Senate, where Democrats hope to reclaim control of both chambers.

Sponsored by More Perfect, a nonpartisan nonprofit aimed at promoting and preserving democracy, the NBC poll also found that 49% of registered voters said they want to see Democrats take control Congress in the midterms. The poll found that 44% of those surveyed prefer Republican control of Congress, while 7% of participants remain unsure.

While GOP support for Trump has also dropped since March, when 88% of Republicans approved of his presidency, the party’s voters are largely sticking by him. Now, 82% of Republicans approve of Trump’s performance as president, according to the NBC poll, and 58% say they “strongly” approve. In March, 63% strongly approved.

“These are rocky numbers for Republicans, but they are not catastrophic,” Republican pollster Bill McInturff said. McInturff, of Public Opinion Strategies, conducted the survey with Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt.

Democrats “are still in a really good position, despite redistricting, to win seats,” Horwitt told NBC News.

The NBC poll surveyed 2,400 registered voters from May 29 to June 7. It has a margin of error of +/- 2 percentage points.
