SANDY, Ore. (KATU) — Multiple people died after a shooting in Sandy on Sunday, during which an officer was shot multiple times during an exchange of gunfire.
Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey told reporters Sunday night, May 31, that officers and Clackamas County deputies responded to reports of a domestic dispute and shooting around 4 p.m. Sunday.
When they arrived at the scene on Evans Street near Ross Avenue, officers came under fire, Huskey said. They returned fire, and the officer was shot. Medical crews later transported the officer via LifeFlight to a hospital with “multiple” gunshot wounds.
Huskey, who did not take questions at the Sunday night press conference, said multiple people died during the incident.
“There are multiple victims deceased at this time,” Huskey said.
The suspect, who police did not immediately identify, surrendered to law enforcement “peacefully.”
“I understand everyone wants answers and information right now, but this remains a very dynamic and active investigation,” Huskey said. “I can tell you that investigators from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and the Clackamas County Major Crimes team are working to process the scene, conduct interviews, and get the answers our community deserves.”
Sandy Mayor Kathleen Walker expressed condolences in a social media post.
“Tonight, our Sandy community grieves the unimaginable loss of lives from a domestic violence incident,†the post read in part. “Our small town is not shielded by distance or size.â€

Around 4 p.m., reports indicated a serious situation in the area. Sandy police and other agencies responded to the scene and remained in the area as details were still unclear at the time.
Authorities warned that the area was not safe and urged people to stay away. Residents nearby were told to lock their doors and remain inside as officers continued to work the scene.

KATU crews said SWAT vans were on the scene as well as different police agencies.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office reposted the Sandy Police Department's message on social media and confirmed the situation. Further details were not immediately available.
Mayor Scott Keyser of neighboring town Molalla in Clackamas County posted the following to his Facebook page, asking residents to join in prayer for first responders involved in the incident in Sandy:
KATU News reached out to Gresham Police; the agency confirmed around 5:43 p.m. that they were assisting Sandy Police and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. The agency did not provide any further information.
Just after 5:50 p.m., Sandy Police confirmed to KATU that the shooting scene remains active.
