As thousands of employees face uncertainty amid Meta's latest restructuring drive, one former employee has drawn attention online after revealing that she voluntarily chose to be part of the company's layoffs.

Julie Bone, who worked as a content designer for Facebook for six years, said she decided to step away because Meta's long-term direction no longer aligned with her own career goals.

The latest restructuring at Meta reportedly impacted nearly 8,000 employees globally as the company continues reshaping teams around artificial intelligence and automation-focused priorities.

In a LinkedIn post reflecting on her departure, Bone explained that the decision was not impulsive and had been building over time as Meta increasingly shifted toward becoming an “AI-first†company.

She said she hoped voluntarily leaving might help preserve the role of another employee who wanted to remain at the company.

Bone noted that she had spent six years at Meta — longer than a majority of the workforce — but felt the timing was right both personally and professionally to move on.

Before joining Meta in 2020, Bone built a journalism and editorial career across major media organisations. According to her professional profile, she previously worked at The Washington Post, where she contributed to coverage of major global and political events including the Arab Spring and multiple US presidential elections. Earlier in her career, she also held editorial positions at The Washington Times.

During her time at Meta, Bone worked on projects related to brand voice and localisation, which she described as some of the most rewarding aspects of her role.

Her comments also offered insight into Meta's evolving workplace culture as AI adoption expands across the tech sector. Bone said employees were increasingly encouraged to use AI tools for prototyping, coding assistance, and automating repetitive tasks. However, she cautioned that simply learning AI tools may not guarantee long-term job security in the industry.

The former Meta employee also emphasised the continued importance of creativity, editorial judgment, and cultural understanding in tech and communication roles.

“In the short term, I'm taking a breather,†she wrote, adding that she would eventually look for opportunities where creative thinking and transparent communication remain highly valued.

Her post quickly gained traction on LinkedIn, where users praised her decision to leave on her own terms and applauded her candid reflections on the changing nature of work inside major technology companies.

The episode comes as several global tech firms continue restructuring operations around artificial intelligence, with companies increasingly prioritising AI-related roles and efficiency-driven workforce changes.
