MELBOURNE, Australia – Frog found in bag of lettuce in Australian supermarket
When Australian farmer Rhys Smoker announced he had found a live frog in a bag of lettuce, his housemates were skeptical. Smoker, from Esperance in Western Australia, was preparing dinner when he made the discovery.
According to housemate Laura Jones, Smoker found the frog among the lettuce leaves inside a sealed plastic bag he had purchased from a supermarket. Initially, Jones and her partner did not believe him, but Smoker brought the bag to the lounge room to show them.
“Obviously there’s a little frog hiding out and, yeah, we all had a little laugh about it,” Jones said. The frog was later named Greg and released into a nearby pond.
Five years ago, a shopper found a 10-foot-long python in a Woolworths supermarket in Sydney. In 2021, a venomous snake was discovered in a bag of lettuce from an ALDI store in Sydney as well.
Woolworths, the supermarket where the frog was found, stated that this was an isolated incident with no similar cases reported. They are investigating the matter with their suppliers. The company apologized to the household and provided a replacement bag of lettuce.
