Taiwan’s U.S. envoy wants peace after Trump-Xi summit

Washington – Taiwan’s representative to the U.S., Alexander Yui, emphasized the desire for peace and stability as Taiwan emerged as a key issue during last week’s summit between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Yui reiterated that Taiwan is not instigating trouble but hopes for normalcy in daily life. President Trump recently returned from Beijing after engaging in discussions with Xi for two days. Taiwan holds strategic importance for China, prompting concerns about potential changes in the U.S.’ commitment to Taiwan’s defense under the current administration.

Trump mentioned extensive talks on Taiwan during his visit, with Xi cautioning about possible clashes if the Taiwan issue remains unresolved. Yui expressed the desire to present Taiwan’s perspective and underscored the history of resilience against Chinese pressure dating back 77 years.

The U.S.’ stance on Taiwan remained unchanged during the summit, with no commitment made regarding weapons sales to Taiwan. Trump views this potential sale as a bargaining tool and advised both Taiwan and China to exercise restraint.

Regarding Taiwan independence, Yui clarified that it signifies independence from Chinese coercion and reaffirmed Taiwan’s sovereignty, democracy, and economic strength. He emphasized a peaceful approach and likened Taiwan’s situation to defending a home against intruders.

The envoy stressed Taiwan’s reluctance for conflict and aimed to enhance security measures in response to external pressures. The focus remains on preserving Taiwan’s independence and way of life amidst geopolitical challenges.
