Happy Sunday, Husker fans. It’s been another strong week on the diamond with postseason momentum building, while football recruiting stays hot and the NIL landscape keeps evolving. Let’s dive into what you may have missed.
Softball Advances to Regional Final
The No. 1 Huskers (No. 4 overall seed) are rolling in their home NCAA Regional. They came from behind to beat South Dakota 4-1 on Friday, then got a gem from Jordy Frahm on Saturday – a 1-hit shutout with a career-tying 16 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over Grand Canyon. Nebraska looks locked in and dangerous as they push for a Super Regional berth right here in Lincoln. Rhonda Revelle’s squad is built for this!
Baseball Finishes Strong, Secures No. 2 Big Ten Seed
Will Bolt’s crew closed the regular season on fire, sweeping Minnesota in a pair of wild slugfests. They capped it with a dramatic comeback, exploding for six runs in the ninth to win 14-11. The Huskers finished 41-14 overall and a program-record 23-7 in Big Ten play. They head into the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed with a double-bye and strong positioning for a regional host spot. This team has serious potential.
Basketball Continues Building the Roster
Fred Hoiberg’s portal work rolls on as they reshape for 2026-27. South Dakota State big Damon Wilkinson (6-10, 245 lbs, 13.9 PPG, nearly 59% FG as a sophomore) is a nice addition alongside the earlier pieces like Sam Orme, Kadyn Betts, Trevan Leonhardt, Boden Kapke, Taj DeGourville, and more. Hoiberg is stacking size and experience – the Huskers are going to look a lot different (and tougher) next season.
Football Recruiting: Pressure Mounting on Tory Pittman
Elite programs are making serious pushes to flip four-star (borderline five-star) Omaha safety Tory Pittman, Nebraska’s highest-ranked commit in the 2027 class. Schools like LSU and Miami have been circling hard, but the local product has stayed committed to the Huskers so far and has a strong relationship with the staff. On the NIL front, it’s no secret Nebraska is operating at a disadvantage compared to the true heavyweights. Top programs are reportedly dropping $40M+ on rosters while the Huskers lag significantly behind the Big Ten elites (and national powers) in available spending power. It makes holding onto in-state studs like Pittman even more challenging. Every win on the field this fall will help.
- The PlayFly NIL arbitration case took a tough turn: the arbitrator ruled against Nebraska, upholding the CSC’s denial of the deals for 18 players (valued at a reported total around $7 million). The Huskers now have to resubmit reworked agreements.
- Matt Rhule’s new contract includes a $5M NIL/intellectual property deal that gives Nebraska rights to his “House Rhules” podcast and branding – another creative way the program is navigating the new landscape.
- Rhule dropped some cryptic tweets this week that have the fanbase confused and speculating. The theme has been Red and White, with many of his coaching staff tweeting or posting a similar red and white picture.
Go Big Red.
