Over the past three years, more than 1,000 Air India employees have been dismissed for ethical misconduct, according to the airline’s chief executive, Campbell Wilson. This reflects the challenges faced in reshaping the corporate culture of India’s flag carrier amidst increasing financial and operational pressures.

Wilson addressed staff at an internal town hall, highlighting disciplinary actions taken against workers involved in various offenses such as smuggling goods off aircraft, allowing excess baggage, and misusing employee travel privileges.

Despite signing a Tata code of conduct annually, Wilson noted the continued termination of hundreds of employees for non-compliance.

The comments shed light on the ongoing cultural transformation at Air India following its acquisition by the Tata Group in 2022. The airline is undergoing an extensive modernization program, with significant orders for new aircraft, cabin revamps, and efforts to enhance service standards.

However, these efforts are being carried out amid challenges in the global aviation industry, including rising fuel prices, geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, and the prolonged closure of Pakistani airspace to Indian carriers.

Wilson emphasized the impact of doubled jet fuel prices, alongside a weaker rupee and reduced consumer demand, adding to the operational challenges faced by the airline.

The closure of airspace has particularly affected westbound international routes, leading to longer flight durations, increased fuel consumption, and complexities in crew scheduling.

While Air India fell short of some financial targets in the previous fiscal year, the airline group continued to expand its operations, carrying nearly 62 million passengers and operating around 8,000 weekly flights. The full-service Air India business generated close to $6 billion in revenue.

To enhance its global position, Air India has introduced retrofitted Boeing 787 aircraft as part of its fleet renewal strategy. Operational initiatives focusing on efficiency improvements, fuel-saving measures, and enhanced connectivity at key airports have been implemented.

Despite these efforts, Wilson cautioned employees about the fragile outlook for the aviation industry, highlighting the need for external factors such as oil price fluctuations and consumer confidence to drive a solid recovery.
