The newly realigned dune at Broadkill Beach has been successfully completed by DNREC after months of work. The project involved shifting sand and redesigning the dune structure, resulting in a transformed coastline and improved beach access.
Previously, the area had steep and uneven sand, but now it has been reshaped into a gradual slope leading to the beach. It no longer has sharp drop-offs or unstable sand cliffs, making it easier for visitors to reach the shoreline.
The project also expanded the beach, creating a wider stretch of sand. Part of the original dune was realigned further inland, and fencing along with new dune grass was added to stabilize the area.
Visitors have expressed their delight at the new dune design, with Lynn Voss commenting on the replanted dune grasses, saying, “It looks great, and it’s a nice, wide beach, beautiful for walking on.” Another visitor, Janis Napolitano, praised the rope fences for protecting the dunes from the ocean.
State officials stated that the redesign was not only for aesthetic purposes but also to enhance the beach’s resilience against storms and tidal impacts. The strengthened dune system is expected to offer greater protection for nearby homes and last longer.
Despite the removal of the ramp at the main beach access point during the realignment, some visitors hope for a new ramp to be built along the dunes in the future for improved accessibility. Enhancing amenities at the main access point could benefit the town in the long run, promoting family-friendly activities.
DNREC has mentioned that there are no immediate plans to rebuild a ramp or other structures at the main beach access point. For further information on the project, interested individuals can visit DNREC’s website.
