LUDLOW, MA (WGGB/WSHM) — Crews responded to a three-alarm fire at an industrial facility on Wyoming Street in Ludlow Tuesday afternoon near Westover Air Base.
Officials said the incident is under control. Hazmat technicians were called to the scene to monitor air quality in the area and found no readings of concern. Fire officials added there is no danger to the public.
Thick black smoke billowed in the air as crews arrived on scene just after 3 p.m. The State Fire Marshal’s Office said a rehab unit was deployed to support firefighter health and safety on scene.
Fire officials said numerous mutual aid departments responded, including crews from the Westover Fire Department, and all worked together to bring the fire under control.
Officials said they are still not sure where or how the fire started. “Now, the thing we want everybody to know is that the fire is now under control. We’re actually in the phase of going through and making sure everything’s out. We’ve also called the state hazmat team in to do some remote area monitoring. We know people may have been concerned about the amount of smoke, so they’ll be monitoring the area to make sure folks are safe,” said Captain Zac Ellison of the Ludlow Fire Department.
Ludlow public safety officials are asking everyone to stay away from the area.
At this time, there are no reports of injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
