Bursts of laughter resonate in the Paese Novu district. Balloons, bicycles, creative workshops and sports demonstrations: children and adults enjoy this day dedicated to sharing. In this popular district of Bastia, smiles can be seen on everyone’s faces. Everyone finds their place, exchanges with others and discovers new activities during the second edition of the “Arts and sports get involved” festival., organized by the Opra Association.
Wheelchair basketball, blind football, boccia and even artistic workshops follow one another with the same objective: to show that sport and culture can be accessible to all: “It seems important to us from a citizen point of view to allow young people to understand what obstacles may be encountered by people with disabilities and to show them that we can share activities together”, explains Françoise Huguet, director of Opra, whose antenna is located in the southern districts of the city.
A “tailor-made” day
Openness to disciplines and others is at the center of the project. “People with disabilities can sometimes feel isolated or unaware of the activities that exist for them. This day also allows information to be circulated”underlines Françoise Huguet who presents the event as both an awareness tool and a vector of social bond.
This is what brought the program to life, following a study carried out with local residents. There were nearly 200 participants. Some people mentioned difficulties in accessing sporting and cultural activities, often due to lack of mobility or information. Opra then chooses to reverse the logic, at least for a day. These are therefore the associations and speakers who came directly to the heart of Paese Novu.
Sport, culture and disability: breaking down barriers
And clearly, the young participants are delighted. “We can move, expend our energy and try lots of sports.”
Beyond the activities, the event therefore pursues a broader objective: to create encounters, to promote diversity and to remind people that sport, culture and disability can be experienced together, and without barriers.
