Joël Henry, who played for numerous elite clubs including Lille, Brest, and Nantes, has passed away.
He was a prodigy of French football, making his debut in the championship at just 16 years old with Lille against Nantes in 1978. Henry went on to win the Coupe de France with Bastia at the age of 19. His death at the age of 63 was announced on social media by journalist Jean Michel-Brochen from L’Equipe.
Born in Armentières in the North of France, Henry began his career at Lille before moving to Bastia where he won the only title of his career. He later returned to Lille, then played for Brest, Nice, Toulon, and ended his career at FC Nantes at the age of 30.
Despite his successful career, the attacking midfielder had some regrets. He revealed to L’Equipe that people had predicted a career similar to Platini for him, especially after winning the Coupe de France at 18 years old. Henry expressed some disappointment for not being able to play in the European Cup the following season due to Lille’s decision.
Reflecting on his career, Henry believed he had only good memories despite what others may say. He emphasized the importance of dedication and hard work to maintain a starting position at the highest level of football.
Joël Henry’s passing marks the end of a remarkable football career that left a lasting impact on the clubs he represented.
