Same rent, different lifestyle: Indian couple shares why they moved to Thailand

An Indian couple living in Thailand has sparked a conversation online after sharing why they decided to relocate from India to the Southeast Asian nation.

In a video posted online, Shreya and Amit said that while India remains special to them, their experience of everyday life in Thailand has been markedly different.

“India will always be home. But after spending time in Thailand, we realised our day-to-day quality of life felt better. Rent costs us about the same as many Tier 1 Indian cities, but the lifestyle that comes with it feels very different,” the couple wrote.â€

Addressing one of the common conveniences associated with urban India, they noted that Thailand lacks ultra-fast delivery services but said that had little impact on their daily routine.

“No, we don’t have 10-minute deliveries. But when there’s a 7-Eleven every few hundred meters, you rarely need them,” they said.

Shreya also pointed to personal safety as a significant difference she has experienced since moving.

“As a woman, walking home late at night doesn’t feel like a risk assessment exercise. I don’t find myself constantly staying hyper-vigilant,” she said.

The couple added that reduced time spent commuting had also contributed to a better lifestyle.

“And perhaps the biggest one: time. It doesn’t feel like life is slipping away in traffic. Less time commuting. More time walking. More time working from cafes. More time together,” they wrote.

The post quickly gained traction on social media, drawing responses from users who related to the couple’s experience.

One user said they had recently returned from Thailand but still found themselves thinking about the country. Another commenter, who had recently moved to Bangkok, said the post was encouraging and expressed hope of having a similar experience after settling in.

A third user, recalling multiple road trips across Thailand, said the country often made them consider relocating, although they would miss Indian food. Another commenter said they wished they could make a similar move and described Thailand as a place that offered many reasons to admire it.

The discussion generated wider conversations online about lifestyle choices, work-life balance and the factors people consider when choosing where to live.
