At a time when current events are saturating us with violence and darkness, we need initiatives that bring concrete change and horizons. And this is the case of Employment Purpose Enterprises (EBE), which produce, in the territories where they are established, numerous benefits, for those who find activity and a social existence, as well as for those who benefit from services which did not exist or which had disappeared, since they are impossible to make profitable in a pure market economy. Because this initiative is essential, it is partly financed by public money, just like the culture of which we are representatives.
Without Zero Long-Term Unemployment Territories (TZCLD), what would become of people who are locked in inaction, in poverty, in situations of disability, and plunged into various forms of despair, without the opportunity to find a place?
Without TZCLD, who would have re-established the bread depot in such an isolated village, or the community café in the neighborhood? Who would support the elderly or sick? Who would come to do the shopping, the hour of gardening, or the little DIY that allows you to live well? Who would accompany isolated people to the doctor, or their children to school? Who would recycle materials, tools, toys, to give them a second life? There is no shortage of tasks, and no one is unemployable, if we make the effort to include and adapt jobs.
However, this superb project, which will soon celebrate its tenth anniversary, must on the one hand be urgently made permanent by law, otherwise the EBEs will close at the end of 2026, rendering nearly 4,000 people unemployed.
A scientific committee recently issued a report on this experiment, calculating its costs in a very assertive manner without really measuring the benefits, on the pretext that they are difficult to quantify.
However, it is obvious that, for the populations who thus benefit from local and “tailor-made” services, and for those who are freed from despair by the feeling of being useful again, the benefits of TZCLD more than justify the investments made.
Parliamentarians, ministers, senior civil service executives, seize this object of collective pride! This is an essential project for society: let’s extend it and finance it according to its merits!
