On the arts bridge – “Carmen the Rebel Bird” and “In Waves” in competition at the international animated film festival

Many authors and directors have launched into animated films. This year, 11 feature films will be in the official competition of the international animated film festival in Annecy and the inauguration of an International Animation Cinema City will take place on June 19, 2026. Phuong Mai Nguyen will present “In Waves” and Sébastien Laudenbach, “Carmen the Rebel Bird.”

Phuong Mai Nguyen chose to adapt the graphic novel by Aj Dungo. In Los Angeles, AJ, a discreet high school student, meets Kristen. She is passionate about surfing, he is passionate about skateboarding and drawing. They fall madly in love; a happy future is looming.Â

Sebastien Laudenbach offers his version of “Carmen, the rebel bird”. In the streets of Seville, Salva, Belén and their gang of street urchins will face all dangers to ward off the threat that hangs over Carmen, a free and flamboyant young woman.

 

Phuong Mai Nguyen, director and Sébastien Laudenbach, director, as well as Mickaël Marin, director of the Annecy festival, were guests of Nathalie Amar onRFI.

“In Waves” will be released in theaters on July 1.

“Carmen the Rebel Bird” will be released in theaters on December 16.

The Annecy Animated Film Festival will be held from June 21 to 27, 2026.
