Iran confirmed, this Thursday, June 18, that it had signed the agreement with the United States ending the war in the Middle East, as announced earlier by the American administration.

“The text of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding was finalized by the signature of the presidents. It is now time to put the implementation of this agreement to the test,” declared the spokesperson for the ministry, Esmaïl Baghaï, quoted by the agency Irna.Â

He added that this signing was done electronically and remotely by the heads of state of the two countries, and that an official ceremony had “no real place” in Iranian plans.

Serious consequences in case of non-compliance

The Swiss government had initially announced that a signing ceremony would take place on Friday at a luxury hotel in Bürgenstock, a mountain overlooking Lake Lucerne, and Tehran that Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and US Vice President JD Vance would attend.

“When the text is signed by the highest officials of the two countries, non-compliance with it will naturally have more serious consequences, and taking into account our past experiences, we preferred that it be like this,” added Mr. Baghaï.Â

The text of the memorandum of understanding, revealed by the two parties, provides that the United States will suspend, upon signature, its sanctions on the sale of Iranian oil, then lift all of its sanctions in the event of the conclusion of a final agreement, at the end of a period of negotiations 60 days.Â

For its part, Iran must allow, within 30 days, the full restoration of maritime traffic in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, whose persistent blockage weighs on the world economy. The text also provides for discussions on nuclear power and a fund for the reconstruction and economic development of Iran.
