According to a report by the UN Secretary-General, the organization has identified 38,558 serious violations of children’s rights in conflicts around the world in 2025, affecting 24,174 children. Many of them suffered multiple forms of violence simultaneously.

The report indicates that the most frequently recorded acts are homicides and injuries to children, with 6,266 deaths and 7,958 injuries respectively. In particular, we note a 34% increase in the number of child deaths compared to 2024.

Furthermore, the United Nations also recorded 8,322 cases of obstruction of humanitarian aid and 6,607 children recruited or used in conflicts. Child abductions remain frequent, with 5,129 cases, many of whom are forcibly recruited into the armed forces or victims of sexual violence.

The report also found that landmines and war-era unexploded ordnance continue to pose a serious danger to children and hinder socio-economic development in many regions.

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Vanessa Frazier, said 2025 will be one of the darkest times for child protection since the launch of the monitoring programme.

The report also indicates that 1,667 children will be detained in 2025 due to proven or suspected contact with warring parties. The United Nations emphasizes that these children must be considered victims of conflict and calls for prioritizing their reintegration into communities rather than their detention. The year 2026 will mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment by the United Nations General Assembly of a mechanism to monitor and protect children in armed conflicts around the world.
