Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo takes place in one of the rooms of the Warp Shinjuku nightclub, in the very touristy and Kabukicho entertainmentnorth of the Shinjuku JR station and next to the hotel🨠Gracery (the one topped with Godzilla’s head). Several performances take place every day during the week, welcoming around 50 spectators to the first basement.

The concept of Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo
The show has existed since August 2024 and aims to combine several types of traditional Japanese arts, while reinterpreting them to make them accessibles à un public varié. It is directed by Denjiro Tanaka, a master of kabuki music, both performer and composer from a long line of No and Kabuki theater musicians.
Thus, the Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo show consists of performances hosted by:
- Japanese drums wadaiko ;
- saber fights;
- traditional dance then please ;
- and a demonstration of ninja techniques.
The attraction is supported by the Japan Ninja Councilan organization recently created to promote tourism around ninja folklore and the culture it represents.
The scenes do not contain dialogue, and the understanding of the story relies on the interpretation of the actors, sometimes supported by a few words in English projected at key moments in the plot. Thus, it is not no need to speak japanese and spectators of all ages and backgrounds can get carried away by the play.

A show at the crossroads of tradition and modernity
The small basement room at Warp Shinjuku can accommodate between 50 and 100 spectators. The chairs are placed in front of a modern stage whose background contains white canvases intended for video projections and special effects.
The plot of Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo is based on a myth particularly popular in Japan and Asia in general: that of tiger and dragon fight. The 2 creatures, also very appreciated particularly in Chinese astrology, represent respectively the principles of yin and yang, both opposed and complementary. This duality is marked by beautiful, simple costumes, in light colors for the dragon and dark colors for the tiger.
The show is varied, alternating very rhythmic moments to the sound of drums with fierce and sensational fights, and calmer scenes where the dramaturgical qualities of the actors can be expressed, all against a backdrop of traditional music.
The staging skillfully mixes traditional arts, the world of ninja warriors and theatrical interpretation. This takes up the codes of Kabuki, reproducing the typical postures, makeup, cries and facial expressions, but in a much more modern and dynamic.

Spectators enjoy a complete immersion experience thanks to the light effects, video projections and powerful sound system. The rather intimate room offers proximity to the actors and acrobats, particularly during certain fights which begin on stage but continue in the aisles, so close that spectators can sometimes feel the breath of the sabers.
We can only recommend this original show to add both a cultural and light touch to your visit to one of the most touristy districts of the capital. We might fear the clichéd appearance of the ninja figure but we let ourselves be carried away by the sometimes breathtaking action. Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo is a ideal outing with friends or familyeven with children, and its 80 minutes unfold without slowness or downtime.
