The German filmmaker Alexander Kluge has passed away at the age of 94. He was awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1966 for “Anita G.” and the Golden Lion two years later. Kluge was a lesser-known figure compared to other German New Cinema pioneers like Volker Schlöndorff and R.W. Fassbinder. He was also a prominent intellectual in his country.

Kluge had a diverse career in various art forms, including experimental cinema, fiction writing, poetry, and producing films and television shows. He remained active in the German intellectual scene and supported artists and thinkers in a unified Germany. He received prestigious awards such as the Georg Büchner, Heinrich Heine, and Theodor Adorno prizes.

While Kluge withdrew from cinema in the mid-1980s, he continued to be a significant presence in the German intellectual landscape. He was one of the last living representatives of the Frankfurt School, founded by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer in the 1920s. Kluge’s controversial views on Ukraine in a 2022 radio interview drew attention to his pacifist convictions.

The French Cinémathèque dedicated a retrospective to Kluge in 2013, recognizing his contributions to German film and culture. His passing marks the end of an era for German cinema and intellectual discourse.
