Spring 2018, a wave of demonstrations sweeps across Chile. Julia, a music student, joins her university’s movement to denounce the harassment and abuse suffered by students for too long. As she finds the courage to share with the students a memory that haunts her, she unexpectedly becomes a central figure in the movement. His testimony, intimate and complex, becomes a wave that shakes, disrupts and disarms a polarized society.

This is Sebastián Lelio’s fourth collaboration with British composer Matthew Herbert. The two men worked together on the filmmaker’s last four films: A Fantastic Woman (2017), Disobedience (2017), Gloria Bell (2018) and The Wonder (2022).

The Wave marks a first in the history of cinema in Chile since there had simply never before been a musical film in the country.

Prior to filming, an Ola Academy allowed the artists involved in the film’s musical sequences to train in stage performance, movement and vocal technique. For three months, this place, designed as a rehearsal and learning space, was organized into targeted two-hour sessions per discipline, namely interpretation, singing and dance.

For the casting, a call for applications relayed on social networks invited actresses, singers and dancers from all over Chile to apply. In total, more than 1,200 candidates sent their videos to highlight their talent and enthusiasm. The quartet of main actresses (Daniela López, Avril Aurora, Lola Bravo and Paulina Cortés) had never made a film before The Wave.
