How a cyclone in Australia further disrupted global gas production

A cyclone along the west coast of Australia has caused disruptions in three of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) production sites. This comes at a bad time as supply disruptions due to the war in the Middle East are already affecting fuel supply.

Australia is one of the leading global exporters of LNG and the main supplier of liquefied gas to Asian countries. Sites operated by Chevron, Gorgon, and Wheatstone account for about 5% of the world’s LNG production, according to the company. Woodside’s Karratha facility processes gas from one of the world’s largest offshore gas fields.

Chevron Australia is working to restore production at the Gorgon and Wheatstone gas facilities following production interruptions. Gorgon, the larger of the two, is operating at reduced capacity, with the potential to produce over 15 million tons of gas per year, while Wheatstone can produce nearly nine million tons.

Australian oil and gas company Woodside Energy also reported an interruption in production at its Karratha site in Western Australia. This disruption further affects fuel supplies at a critical time.
