Our favorite: “An Italian Year†, by Laura Samani

Genre: marvel. We have rarely seen a chronicle of sentimental education as intelligent and seductive as this story of four Italian boys and a girl from elsewhere, all four irresistible. (Italy, 1h42, with Stella Wendick, Giacomo Covi, Pietro Giustolisi.)

“Disclosure Dayâ€, de Steven Spielberg

Genre: cosmic. Steven Spielberg finds his favorite toys: extraterrestrials, childhood, conspiracy and faith in humanity. A spectacular SF fable, full of rhythm, humor, ideas for staging and emotion. (United States, 2h25. With Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo.)

“The Christophersâ€, de Steven Soderbergh

Genre: master canvas. Eight unfinished paintings, a tyrannical old painter, a gifted young forger: with this twisted and reflective suspense on art, Soderbergh remakes a heist and scam film, but differently. And elegantly. (UK/US. 1h40. With Michaela Coel, Ian McKellen, Jessica Gunning.)

“Vertigo†, by Quentin Dupieux

Genre: Oulipian. An animated film in poor 3D, like a video game from the 1990s, Dupieux’s latest unidentified film object mocks our addiction to screens. With Alain Chabat, and Jonathan Cohen as prophet of the techno apocalypse. (Animated film, France, 1h07.)

“At the edge of the world†, by Guérin van de Vorst and Sophie Muselle

Type: hospital closed door. Naturalistic and strong immersion in a closed unit of a psychiatric hospital following an increasingly involved trainee nurse. Mara Taquin is fantastic! (Belgium. 1h45. With Mara Taquin, Sasha Deprez, Nathalie Richard.)

“My darling family†, by Isild Le Besco

Like: happy shit. The director mixes up all the excesses but also all the graces of a “crazy” family in this chronicle which also speaks very nicely about mourning. Five-star cast. (France, 1h23. With Élodie Bouchez, Jeanne Balibar, Marisa Berenson, Isild Le Besco.)

“The Last True Samurai†, by Yunichi Yasuda

Genre : Visitors in Japan. Struck by lightning, a samurai from the Edo era wakes up on the set of a historical series in today’s Japan. A nice comedy which is also a beautiful tribute to cinema. (Japan, 2h11. With Makiya Yamaguchi, Norimasa Fuke, Yuno Sakura.)

“From one world to another†, by Jérémie Renier and Loury Lag

Genre : sincère. To overcome the sudden loss of his best friend, Jérémie Renier decides to cross a piece of the Arctic ice floe with the explorer Loury Lag. A tribute film, sincere although a bit sentimentalist. (Documentary, France, 1h14.)

“The Furious†, de Kenji Tanigaki

Genre: fights. In Hong Kong, a father and a journalist seek to dismantle a criminal network. This action film seduces in its diehard dimension. (Hong Kong/China, 1h53. With Miao Xie, Joe Taslim, Brian Le.)

“Son of Nobody†, by Safy Nebbou

Genre: uncomfortable. After the death of his wife, a Frenchman returns to Thailand with the Thai child who has become their son… A film about adoption and its difficulties, spoiled by a scenario with oversimplifying dramatic effects. (France, 1h37. With Romain Duris, Master Sanpasiri, Khosittachawanich, Vithaya Pansringarm.)

“A Second Life†, by Laurent Slama

Genre : fragile. On the day of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, a young hearing-impaired woman fights against her depression. Very New Wave free cinema, but whose charm quickly runs out of steam, due to lack of script.
