On March 26, 2026, two Salk scientists, Gerald Shadel and Tatyana Sharpee, were elected as American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) 2025 Fellows. This prestigious honor recognizes their significant contributions to science and society. The AAAS Fellows are distinguished scientists, engineers, and innovators who have made noteworthy advancements in their respective fields.

Gerald Shadel, PhD, is a molecular biologist and co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for Biology of Aging Research at Salk. He specializes in mitochondria research and has made groundbreaking discoveries on how mitochondrial function influences aging, cancer, and degenerative diseases. His recent work on mitochondrial DNA and inflammation could lead to new treatments for autoimmune diseases and age-related conditions.

Tatyana Sharpee, PhD, is a neuroscientist at Salk who uses mathematics, statistics, and physics to study the brain and sensory experiences. Her research aims to understand how the brain functions amidst constant changes in neural connections and how this knowledge can lead to advancements in treating diseases like stroke, Alzheimer’s, and schizophrenia.

Both Shadel and Sharpee join a group of nearly 500 scientists, engineers, and innovators elected as AAAS 2025 Fellows. At Salk, they are among seven other faculty members who have also received this prestigious recognition.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) was founded in 1848 and is committed to promoting the development of science and engineering globally. Through partnerships, programs, and advocacy efforts, AAAS strives to integrate scientific evidence into public policy and support the growth of science around the world.
